Bettina Hutschek is a visual artist and filmmaker living and working between Berlin and Malta. Her practice spans essay films, conceptual installations, performances, and text-based works, through which she investigates historiography, narrative construction, and the politics of knowledge. By combining documentary material with speculative and poetic strategies, she critically examines dominant narratives and claims to truth.
Her work has been exhibited and performed internationally since 2004, including at Fondation Cartier (Paris), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), nGbK and nbk Berlin, Centre d’Art Passerelle (Brest), Musée Malraux (Le Havre), Albertinum Dresden, Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig, ICCA Bucharest, Deutsches Haus NYC, Cappadox Festival, and maltabiennale. In 2017, she co-curated the Maltese Pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia with Raphael Vella. She is the founder and artistic director of FRAGMENTA Malta, a non-profit platform for experimental art in public space.
Hutschek studied Fine Art with Lothar Baumgarten at the Berlin University of the Arts (graduated 2004) and completed her Meisterschüler degree with Tina Bara at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB) in 2008. In 2010, she was Visiting Scholar at the Department of Performance Studies at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in New York City.

Bettina Hutschek ist bildende Künstlerin und Filmemacherin und lebt in Berlin und Malta. Ihre künstlerische Praxis befasst sich mit Prozessen der Geschichtsschreibung sowie mit der Analyse und Transformation narrativer Strukturen. In Installationen, Essay-Filmen, Textarbeiten und Performances verbindet sie dokumentarische Elemente mit fiktionalen und spekulativen Verfahren und entwickelt daraus Konzepte einer „erweiterten Geschichte“, die Narrative und Wahrheitsansprüche kritisch reflektieren. Ein zentraler Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit liegt auf der Untersuchung von Wissensvermittlung durch Sprache und Text, wobei die Frage nach Wissen häufig als Frage nach dem Glauben an bestimmte Wissensformen verhandelt wird.
Ihre Ausbildung umfasst Studien der Kunstgeschichte, Philosophie und Bildender Kunst an der Universität der Künste Berlin. Das Meisterschülerstudium absolvierte sie an der HGB Leipzig. 2024 schloss sie den Masterstudiengang Konferenzdolmetschen an der Universität Leipzig mit der postkolonial ausgerichteten Arbeit “Dolmetschen im Restitutionskontext” ab und vertiefte damit ihre transdisziplinäre Arbeit an der Schnittstelle von Sprache, Übersetzung und Kunst. Sie arbeitete als Kunstvermittlerin am Centre d’Art passerelle in Brest sowie als visiting scholar am Department of Performance Studies der NYU Tisch School of the Arts in New York City.
Hutschek realisierte zahlreiche internationale Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen, Screenings und Performances; ihre Arbeiten befinden sich in privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen. 2013 gründete sie die Plattform FRAGMENTA Malta, die sie seither künstlerisch leitet. 2017 kuratierte sie gemeinsam mit Raphael Vella den maltesischen Pavillon auf der Biennale di Venezia mit der Installation HOMO MELITENSIS. In ihrer aktuellen Arbeit untersucht sie erzählerische Formen als künstlerische Erkenntnismethode und arbeitet derzeit an einer Publikation zu ihren Typewritings sowie an der Produktion des Essay-Films “Encountering Atlantis”.

What is my work about?
Bettina uses fragments of different realities to tell stories. Through storytelling, she analyzes contemporary questions and concerns, and translates them into contemporary “myths”. Her research deals with mythological tales, urban space, collective memory and the politics of images. In her work, she juxtaposes and melds layers of fiction and “truth”, in order to question “reality” in an absurd and ironic, however mostly poetic way. Often set in imaginary lands, her stories create versions of an “extended” history. Her artistic practice generates various forms: essay-films, books, texts, fictive documentaries, performances, guided tours and installations. All of her stories examine the possibilities of knowledge transfer – what do we know, and what do we believe to know?
Bettina verwendet Fragmente verschiedener Realitäten, um Geschichten zu erzählen. Durch das Geschichtenerzählen analysiert sie zeitgenössische Fragen und Anliegen und übersetzt sie in zeitgenössische “Mythen”. Ihre Forschung befasst sich mit mythologischen Erzählungen, urbanem Raum, kollektivem Gedächtnis und der Politik der Bilder. In ihrer Arbeit stellt sie Schichten von Fiktion und “Wahrheit” nebeneinander und verschmilzt sie, um die “Realität” auf absurde und ironische, jedoch meist poetische Weise zu hinterfragen. Ihre Geschichten, die oft in imaginären Ländern spielen, schaffen Versionen einer “erweiterten” Geschichte. Ihre künstlerische Praxis bringt verschiedene Formen hervor: Essay-Filme, Bücher, Texte, fiktive Dokumentationen, Performances, Führungen und Installationen.
