THE LIFT

THE LIFT documents the life and functioning of the new lift at Upper Barrakka Gardens, Valletta, designed by Architecture Project. We see the Barraka Lift over the course of one entire day. Actors and travellers move around, in interaction with the architecture.

Linking sea level and city level, the lift constitutes a firm yet gentle presence in the dry ditch that separates this 16th-century fortified town from the mainland, while changing its aspect at the same time as its twin cabins move people relentlessly along the powerful landward fortified walls.

THE LIFT was commissioned by AP Valletta for the Architecture Biennale Venezia 2014. It was presented in the exhibition ‘Year 2225 – a triptych’, part of ‘Time Space Existence’.
